MBS has established a Travel Award to enable postdocs to present their work at research meetings, conferences, and symposia.

The award will provide reimbursement for registration and travel expenses of up to $2,000 to postdocs presenting their research at meetings. Travel awardees will be selected by a faculty committee. Awardees will acknowledge the MBS Travel Award in their poster or oral presentations and agree to present their work at poster sessions during the MBS retreat. Awardees will also provide a complete accounting of all the resources received towards their attendance at the meeting.

Any postdoc in MBS planning to present their work at a conference is eligible to apply for this award. Travel dates much occur while an active postdoc appointment is held within the department.  Postdocs are eligible to be awarded once per academic year. Due to a limited budget, priority will be given to those that haven't received an award in the last two academic years.

Materials to be submitted with the application

  1. Travel award application form, which will include: a proposal indicating the meeting they plan to attend, the reason for and significance of the meeting, and the amount of support requested to cover travel and registration expenses.
  2. Copy of the abstract that will be submitted for the meeting.
  3. CV including list of publications (include conference abstracts).

There are three deadlines per academic year.

For 2018-19, the application deadlines are: December 4, 2018, April 15, 2019, and July 15, 2019.  The award must be received prior to any expenses incurred.

Instructions for submission

Please submit all materials as one PDF by noon on the day of the deadline with a subject line of "Postdoc Travel Grant" to: kasey.holt@austin.utexas.edu.

Reimbursement mechanism

If a travel grant is awarded, please route the request for travel authorization (RTA) through MBS (Molecular Biosciences-Travel (00171)) so that the award will become accessible for direct charging or reimbursement. For more information on the RTA process see: https://molecularbiosci.utexas.edu/resources/travel

In some cases, it may be possible to arrange for a cash advance to allow payments of costs that occur significantly before expected reimbursement. For questions, please contact: kasey.holt@austin.utexas.edu.
