Congratulations 2014 Graduates!

The first graduation celebration for the approximately 270 seniors in the class of 2014 from the new Department of Molecular Biosciences honored students and their families on May 16.  With over 300 in attendance, students honored received degrees in Biochemistry, Cell & Molecular Biology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Microbiology, Plant Biology and Public Health.  Dr. Matt Winkler, successful founder of three biotechnology companies in Austin (Ambion, Assuragen, Mirna), was the keynote speaker and  encouraged the graduates to take chances as he did when he left his position as a faculty member at UT and started Ambion. The students each received a graduation medal and lapel pin.   The symbols on the medal honor the long history of molecular biosciences research at UT including Nobel prize winning work of Herman Muller on the mutagenic effects of X-rays on fruit fly DNA and the discovery of folic acid by Esmond Snell from 2 tons of spinach.  The microscope was inspired by one of the cornices on the now gone Experimental Science Building.
